Understanding War and Peace: Gender Violence in India

I was employed by Dr. Dan Reiter of Emory University's Department of Political Science to write literature reviews regarding gender and conflict in India to inform the examples used within the second edition of the upcoming textbook, "Understanding War and Peace" currently under review by Cambridge University Press, and scheduled for publication in 2022. From this experience, I learned how to conduct and plan comprehensive literature reviews on peer-reviewed qualitative and quantitative data, to present my findings in a synthesized and compacted manner, and additionally created figures to model and summarize the data associated with the quantitative findings of these literature reviews.

My responsibilities included conducting literature reviews on the following items about gender and conflict  more broadly:
  •  Connections Between Testosterone Levels And Interpersonal Aggression
  •  Whether Gender/Sex Affects The Way People Play Cooperation Games In Experimental Settings Like Prisoner’s Dilemma
  •  Causes Of Sexual Assault During Wartime, And Within Militaries
  •  Women As Militants In Rebel Groups, Including Women As Leaders Of Rebel Groups, Such As Whether Militant Groups Behave Differently If They Are Led By Women
  •  Women As Terrorists, And Also Work On How Terrorist Groups Use Gender To Recruit Terrorists
  •  Effects Of Gender Inequality On Any Form Of Conflict, Including Interstate Conflict, Terrorism, Civil Wars, Genocide, Human Rights Violations, Etc.
  •  Effects On Conflict Patterns Of Female National Leaders, Members Of Parliament, Cabinet Members, Etc.
  •  Effects Of Legislative Gender Quotas On Patterns Of Violence/Conflict
  •  Gender And Public Opinion On Foreign Policy, Like Do Women In Society Have Systematically Different Opinions On Areas Like The Use Of Force
  •  Gender And Military Effectiveness, Like Do Women Soldiers Fight As Well, Better Than, Or Worse Than Male Soldiers
  •  How Violence And Warfare Affects Gender, Eg Gender Roles And Gender Equality
  •  Gender And Aggressive Behavior In Children
Additionally, I conducted a set of literature reviews to inform an accompanying case study on gender and conflict in India.  My responsibilities included researching the following:
  •  Gender And Various Terrorist And Insurgent Groups In India
  •  Gender And Political Leadership (Eg Indira Gandhi)
  •  Gender And Public Opinion In India
  •  Traditional Cultural Values, Gender, And Conflict, Eg Marital Rape Not Being A Crime
